In the realm of business, networking skills can vary widely among professionals. Contrary to common belief, being outgoing or extraverted does not automatically make one effective at networking. True networking goes beyond social interactions; it involves a strategic approach that aims to build meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships.

Several factors contribute to networking effectiveness, such as the ability to identify common interests, offer value to the other party without immediate expectation of return, and sustain the relationship over time. Many professionals, whether introverted or extraverted, may not possess the nuanced understanding or willingness to implement these elements, leading to less effective networking.

Therefore, it would be inaccurate to broadly state that most business professionals are good at networking. Rather, it’s a specialized skill set that requires conscious effort and ongoing improvement.

This question raises subjective responses.

From my perspective, of those business professionals I know, they don’t.

A comprehensive answer requires exploration of the terms ‘good’ and ‘networking.’ And ‘business professionals’ for that matter.

Business professionals isn’t a one-size-fits-all category. There are introverts, extraverts, shy people, and outgoing ones. The outgoing ones and the extraverts enjoy networking more than the shy and introverted.

But just because a person is outgoing, that doesn’t mean that they are ‘good’ at networking. Being a social butterfly or a chatterbox, doesn’t mean that you are a good networker.

Effective networking requires strategy i.e., some thought behind what you are doing. It also involves having a purpose and a goal.

A couple years ago, I wrote a book entitled Power Networking for Shy People: How to Network Like a Pro It provides strategies for both shy and outgoing business networkers.

As a business professional, networking is a tried-and-true method of not only increasing your connectedness but your earning potential.

I wasn’t a good business networker. I’m not perfect yet but I’m a lot better than many and continually work on improving my effectiveness.
